Pneumonia and Homeopathy (Cough, Cough)

On the chance that you have completely turned off the news in order to avoid election coverage, you may not have heard that former Secretary Hillary Clinton had to leave a 9/11 memorial event because she was suffering from pneumonia.

With the advent of antibiotics, the number of fatalities from pneumonia have fallen dramatically.  Before the introduction of sulfa drugs in the 1930’s, 30-40% of people who got pneumonia died from it, according to the National Institutes of Health.  Now, the percent who die from pneumonia is 14.8%, according to the latest statistics (2013) put out by the CDC and the American Lung Association.

pneumococcalSo clearly, it is still a serious disease, especially when one ignores it or doesn’t take care of oneself when afflicted by it. Regardless if the event is as significant as a 9/11 memorial, if you have pneumonia, STAY. IN. BED!  REST!  You can still die from pneumonia, even though the likelihood has decreased significantly.

According to news reports, Clinton was up to date on her pneumonia vaccines.  Given how ineffective it was for her, thought I would do some research to see exactly how effective the pneumonia vaccine is.

Because pneumococcal bacteria can adapt and change, what used to be only 2-4 serotypes is now 90.  The Pneumovax vaccine has 23 of the serotypes that most commonly cause illness.  How effective in preventing vaccine is this popular vaccine? According to Johns Hopkins Medical Center, “It should be noted that vaccination does NOT reduce pneumonia.”  Wait, What??? “A meta-analyses shows no decrease in pneumonia incidence as a result of vaccination, however it has been shown to be about 60-70% effective in preventing invasive disease (meningitis, bacteremia).”  Only one study shows decreased mortality from pneumonia.  You can read this for yourself right here:  http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/gec/series/pneumococcal_vaccination.html

ID-10076028

Get your rest if you have pneumonia.  Don’t go to work as this gentleman did.

According to the CDC, once you are vaccinated, you will likely never need to be revaccinated.  No kidding.  I should add that this is a controversial statement.  The vaccine manufacturers, of course, think you should have it more often than just once.

Enter homeopathy.  There are 179 remedies for pneumonia in the homeopathic Materia Medica.  It even gets specific, such as right lobe, left lobe, lower lobe, upper lobe.  There is a wealth of experience helping people who have pneumonia by using the correct homeopathic remedies.  Notice I made that plural.  Often with a serious acute illness that have phases, such as pneumonia, you need more than one remedy over time to help heal the lungs.  If you or someone in your family is prone to getting respiratory illnesses, you may want to consider having some higher potency (200C or 1M) doses of the most common pneumonia remedies around.  These include Aconite, Belladonna, Chelidonium, Ferrum Phos, Ipecachuana, Veratrum Veride, Phosphorus, etc.  You can even take homeopathy along with the antibiotics, although it may be nearly impossible to assess the effectiveness of the remedy if you do that.  One of the benefits, however of adding the correct homeopathic remedy to a case of pneumonia, even if you are taking antibiotics, is that you have less of a chance of getting a repeat case, or falling into the cycle of repeated doses of antibiotics.

Homeopathy also can be used to reduce your chances of getting pneumonia. Homeoprophylaxis includes a remedy made from pneumococcal bacteria and can be taken as directed to educate the immune system about this germ.  It is a part of the homeoprophylaxis program for children, but can be taken by adults.  I’m guessing it is more effective than the vaccine.  And BONUS! the homeprophylaxis version is not filled full of additional ingredients that have not really been safety tested with a true placebo.

If your lungs are a common source of dis-ease, i.e., frequent bronchitis, colds, coughs, pneumonia, you should definitely see a classical homeopath to help strengthen your respiratory system. That is probably the best way to reduce your chances of getting pneumonia. According to Chinese Medicine, the lungs and skin are related, so a good constitutional remedy will also help your skin.

Can The Weather Make You Sick?

In a word:  Yes.

Many medical professionals will say things like, “You can’t get a cold by being cold.”  Or, “There is no evidence that the weather can make you sick.”  Wrong and Wrong.

Anyone who says that weather has no influence on whether you get sick or not, hasn’t studied homeopathy.

imgp4696webThe most obvious symptoms arise when someone is anxious about the weather.  Stormy weather can cause a good deal of anxiety in some people, which can lead to physical symptoms.  Warm weather can make people apathetic and not want do their work.  And of course, Seasonal Affective Disorder, wide spread in Minnesota in the winter, can cause the blues on cloudy days.

Physically, there are many weather related illnesses.  Everyone probably has an aunt or a friend who can predict the weather due to physical pains that pop up just before the rain or other damp conditions.  Skin conditions such as eczema can get worse in summer or winter, depending on the constitutional homeopathic remedy a person needs.

Children often get ear infections, or pain in the ears if their heads aren’t covered properly in the winter. People get tooth aches if the weather is damp or cold.

There are countless homeopathic symptoms that are weather related.  Well, not really countless.  There are 1027  homeopathic symptoms with the word “weather” associated with them.  There are 144 remedies which cover the General symptom of Becoming Cold Aggravates.  There are 110 remedies in the General symptom of Change of Weather Aggravates.

Here are a few of the more helpful, weather related acute care remedies that you might need.

imgp4676webDulcamara:  Minnesota has the perfect fall weather to create conditions under which Dulcamara will be required.  Illness that comes around with warm days and cool nights, such as we are experiencing now (Fall, 2016) frequently need Dulcamara.  This is especially true when the weather is also damp, such as we have had this fall as well.  This could be coughs, croup, general cold symptoms, illnesses involving the mucous membranes. in particular.  Dulcamara, along with several other remedies, also covers the symptom of diarrhea in autumn.

You could also use Dulcamara prophylactically.  Since it is a common remedy that people are needing this fall, a couple 30C doses just might help ward whatever is going around.

Aconite:  When the weather gets bitter cold in the winter, make sure you have some Aconite 30c and 200c handy. (You might need to get the 200c from a homeopathic practitioner.)  If you get exposed to the bitter cold Minnesota winter winds, and then rapidly develop a high fever or a cold, Aconite will help.  This fever or cold is generally accompanied by a great deal of fear and anxiety, that something akin to death will occur…soon.  Aconite won’t be the last remedy needed in a situation like this, but a few doses will get you through the worst of it.

Rhus Tox:  This remedy has so many weather related symptoms, that it would be nearly impossible to write about all of them.  Rhus Tox is an arthritis remedy, among other things.  The symptoms are generally better in the summer, when the weather is warm and sunny.  On the other hand, when it we are experiencing cloudy, overcase or foggy weather, symptoms may appear or may get worse. Rhus Tox symptoms come on often in autumn. Rhus Tox headaches, for example, may appear with damp weather, before or during a storm, or when the weather changes.  A confirmatory symptom would be that the headache (or any symptom) is better with motion.  Most of us prefer to lie down with a headache.  But if you feel better moving around, consider Rhus Tox.

If the weather is literally getting you down, consider homeopathy.  Give a call.

The Longer I Ride, The Better I Feel…

Bill Walton was an NBA All-Star when I was a kid.  He was fun to watch.  Definitely a fan favorite.  But he was frequently injured and has spent much of his life in pain, according to an article in the April 21, 2016 edition of the Wall Street Journal.

WebP5261152Long since retired, he has become a bicycling aficionado, to say the least.  Even when he was a child, he loved riding his bicycle, to practice, back home, to school, and just for fun. Now as a retired athlete, he has a great deal of time to ride his bike and rides it many hours each day.  He feels more comfortable on his bike than any other activity in which he may participate.  “The longer I ride, the better I feel,” he says.  Unlike many former pro athletes, he takes no medication and has no pain.

That statement is a perfect summary of the remedy Bellis perennis.

Bellis perennis is a relative of Arnica montana.  So it has a lot to do with pain and trauma. Arnica is a mountain daisy.  Bellis is a common daisy, and it is well known for “old gardener’s injuries”, according to the old homeopathy books. Indeed, it is also a remedy for old football injuries, and perhaps old basketball injuries.

People who need Bellis perennis often say that once they start moving they feel better, but their first motion is very painful until they have gotten going.  This is also true of the remedy Rhus tox.

The difference between the two remedies lies in Bill Walton’s statement, “The longer I ride, the better I feel.”

Like Bellis perennis, Rhus tox feels worse on first motion and better on continued motion. But with Rhus tox, eventually, enough is enough and you feel worse again. With Bellis perennis, you can never move too much.  You just feel better and better as you keep moving.

Here is a summary of Bellis perennis:

Modalities for Bellis Perennis:

  • Pain better from continued motion. Rhus Tox also has this modality, but eventually you move too much with Rhus Tox and you must stop moving.  This is not true for Bellis Perennis.
  • Better from cold applications but worse from cold air or cold bathing.
  • Could also be better from Cold bathing, but generally always worse from cold air or wind.
  • Better from warm and warm applications.
  • The pain is worse than it seems it ought to be given the situation.

Here are some situations where you would choose Bellis Perennis over Arnica:

  • Injury to the Coccyx (Tailbone).
  • An old injury that has flared up. I had an old injury to the tailbone that reappeared with just a minor touch on the edge of a table I had bumped into.  It was much more painful than it seemed it should have been and it was better if I kept walking.  A week of Bellis Perennis 30c 3x a day made the injury disappear for good. This was several years ago.  I haven’t felt the pain since.
  • Recovering from surgery, especially deep surgery.
  • Abdominal surgery or injury.
  • Help speed recovery from any surgery.
  • Head Lice. (22 other remedies cover that symptom as well.)
  • When Arnica has ceased to work or simply isn’t working but seems like it should.
  • When you have left over pain and bruising (ecchymosis) from surgery or an injury that Arnica can’t heal.

Mental picture of Bellis Perennis:

Arnica often denies that anything is wrong.  This is not part of the picture of Bellis.  Bell-P has ritualistic behaviors, so when injured might be very structured and insist on doing things a certain way. They also might be slow to figure out what is going on. They are generally cheerful, and often compensate by being the tough guy (Compositae family).

I’m not trying to get Bill Walton to stop riding his bike, but he definitely could use a break from riding hours on end.  (See need for ritualistic activity, above.)  Several doses of Bellis perennis over time would definitely enable him to feel less pain and have a more multi-dimensional life.

Oddly, Bellis perennis is not readily available in the store.  So if you need some, please contact me.

Is There Really a Flu Season?

We often hear about the flu season along with dire predictions about how bad it will be the next six months or so.

Sneezing is just one symptom of AllergiesIs there really a flu season?  Or is it a payback season for all the unhealthy living we have done, coupled with cold weather and the lack of sunshine, which equals lack of vitamin D?

Diet

Let’s begin with the Standard American Diet or SAD. Sad indeed.

When I look through the grocery advertisements in the Sunday paper, I see more specials for junky food than for healthy food. The week of Thanksgiving, this week, tends to actually have healthier ads that other weeks.  Turkey, Sweet Potatoes, Mashed potatoes are generally on the healthier end of the spectrum, depending on how you prepare them.  But there are still the discounts for buying multiple cases of soda pop–which is never healthy. Stove Top Stuffing–bad news.  Jello or pudding–full of nasty ingredients. (BTW, Gelatin itself is good.  Its the sugar and artificial color that ruin it. So make it yourself from scratch.)  Let’s face it. Eating healthy is an expensive venture.  Thanksgiving or not.

CandyGrid-BulkThen we have the trifecta of candy holidays, Halloween, Christmas and Valentines Day.  Then throw in the jelly beans and chocolate bunnies at Easter and you have the entire flu season covered. They are perfectly spread out so that they are about equal distant apart, to be sure there is a regular supply of sugar running through our veins, suppressing our immune system.  Even WebMD admits that sugary foods and drinks curb the positive effects of cells that affect bacteria and viruses.  This is even true of orange juice, which has a high level of natural sugars.

And of course alcohol.  Alcohol begins flowing around Thanksgiving and continues through the new year.  Alcohol is highly refined sugar, so any negative affects that can be assigned to sugar and also be assigned to alcohol.  Plus additional ones all its own.

Vitamin D

As you have probably heard by now, we get a steady supply of Vitamin D from the sun in the summer, as long as you spend at least 15 minutes out side in the sun each day.  Winter becomes problematic.  Not only do we not spend time outside during the winter, usually, the sun is at the wrong angle to absorb much Vitamin D.  So even if you are a winter outdoors enthusiast, you are probably deficient in Vitamin D. This is especially true if you live north of a line from Philadelphia to San Francisco.  In Minnesota, we do.

Why is this a problem?  According to Harvard University, low levels of Vitamin D has been linked with all sorts of immune system problems, chronic and acute.  This includes influenza.  http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/vitamin-d/

Exercise

Regular exercise can also help reduce your risk of getting sick.  But of course, if you tend to prefer exercising outdoors, you may be reducing your exercise.  Exercising in the gym is always an option, but puts you in contact with a lot of other people, spreading their germs because they too eat poorly and don’t get enough vitamin D and are exposed to cold weather as well.

Weather

Conventional wisdom says that getting cold doesn’t give you a cold or make you sick.  But spend a day with a homeopath during changes of seasons and particularly cold weather and you will see that there is an effect.  For example, the homeopathic remedy Aconite is well known to be effective against colds, high fevers, and ear infections that come on after exposure to cold, dry wind in the winter.  So yes, getting cold can make you sick.

The interaction of diet, lack of vitamin D and the cold weather in the winter can converge and increase your susceptibility in the months of November through April, the most common months to get colds and respiratory influenza.

So if we tie it all together–Standard American Diet, low levels of Vitamin D, lack of exercise and cold weather–we make a perfect host for bacteria and germs of all sorts, just lurking around, ready to make us sick if we give them the chance.

What does a healthy host–that is, one that doesn’t attract germs–look like?  That is a topic for another blog.

Flu Season?  Is it natural or a consequence of our lifestyles?  You decide.

An Arnica Story, Sort Of….

I recently went with my family to England for a few days on a short holiday.  I always encourage people to bring Arnica, and other remedies like Rhus Tox, Bryonia and Ruta, along on vacation. There is nothing like an injury to ruin a vacation.  Those are great injury remedies.

SoreBackI would not likely have recommended the remedy I actually ended up needing.

While trying to keep up with my husband, who is always in a hurry, I tripped going up some shallow stairs.  I got a bruise or two on my leg and my lower back started hurting.  I have a history of my lumbar spine getting injured when I have fallen in the past.

I took some Arnica for my leg, never dreaming that it would have helped my back.  But it did!  A dose of Arnica 12c twice a day was all it took.  After a few days of that, I developed a cough–a tickly cough that was worse when I laid down in bed and better from warm beverages.  I tried a couple of different remedies for the cough, which is an old symptom that hadn’t appeared in at least five years. I had minimal help.

Then I had inspiration to take a more holistic view of the cough.  Kali Carbonicum is a remedy well known for tickly coughs that are worse from lying down.  But, it also covers the symptom of lower back pain where the back feels weak.  That is exactly how my back felt. The tickly cough came up as a sign from my body to take a different remedy.  So I took Kali Carb 12c.  Within an hour, I had a huge coughing episode and then suddenly, everything was better–my cough and my back.

The questions are, was Arnica the right remedy? Or should I have taken Kali Carb for my back sooner?  The answer to both questions is yes.  Arnica was the right remedy, but once the pain in my leg became manageable, I should have switched.  The Arnica helped my back, but the pain went right back to the original pain once the remedy wore off–not so for the leg.  That is a sign that it isn’t the right remedy.  The strength in my lower back came back with one dose of Kali Carb 12c.

Once again, a holistic view of symptoms always helps arrive at the correct remedy for the situation.

Call for a more holistic view of your health problems.

Ragweed Allergies–Homeopathy Can Help!

With August just around the corner, that means Ragweed Allergies are too. This post offers some suggestions.

Lotus Homeopathy: Health News You Can Use

This has been quite a season for sneezing and allergies, hasn’t it?  I don’t recall one this bad in recent memory.

If you live in the US, and your allergies typically flair up in the August through Frost time frame, you are probably allergic to Ragweed.  Symptoms include itchy eyes, itchy and runny nose, sneezing–you know the picture.

Speaking of pictures, this is what it looks like now.

Ragweed in all it’s blossoming glory, spreading pollen to everyone. An equal opportunity sneeze plant.

This is what it looks like in the spring, when you could still pull it up without disturbing any pollen.

This is what it looks like before it blossoms and you could actually pull it out of the ground without spreading pollen around.

There are other forms of ragweed in the US, but this is the most common.

Briefly, some natural things to do to help with…

Spring Allergies and Homeopathy

I wrote this blog post in 2012. It is still relevant.

Lotus Homeopathy: Health News You Can Use

With the strange winter we had in Minnesota, followed by the early and equally odd spring, all bets are off in terms of predicting what sorts of weather related or seasonal issues may arise.

So when people started calling, presenting with allergy symptoms they don’t normally experience, I wasn’t too surprised.

Homeopathy can help relieve symptoms of Allergies, and it can help assure they don’t come back.  In fact, allergies are one of the prime reasons people seek homeopathic care.  It also happens to be the case that allergies are the most researched and most proven ailment that homeopathy has been found to treat effectively.  Personally, I have gotten over seasonal allergies and cat allergies using homeopathy over the years.

In homeopathy, we can manage the symptoms of allergies during the worst season for you by simply matching a remedy to the symptoms you are currently experiencing.  However, once the…
