Can The Weather Make You Sick?

In a word:  Yes.

Many medical professionals will say things like, “You can’t get a cold by being cold.”  Or, “There is no evidence that the weather can make you sick.”  Wrong and Wrong.

Anyone who says that weather has no influence on whether you get sick or not, hasn’t studied homeopathy.

imgp4696webThe most obvious symptoms arise when someone is anxious about the weather.  Stormy weather can cause a good deal of anxiety in some people, which can lead to physical symptoms.  Warm weather can make people apathetic and not want do their work.  And of course, Seasonal Affective Disorder, wide spread in Minnesota in the winter, can cause the blues on cloudy days.

Physically, there are many weather related illnesses.  Everyone probably has an aunt or a friend who can predict the weather due to physical pains that pop up just before the rain or other damp conditions.  Skin conditions such as eczema can get worse in summer or winter, depending on the constitutional homeopathic remedy a person needs.

Children often get ear infections, or pain in the ears if their heads aren’t covered properly in the winter. People get tooth aches if the weather is damp or cold.

There are countless homeopathic symptoms that are weather related.  Well, not really countless.  There are 1027  homeopathic symptoms with the word “weather” associated with them.  There are 144 remedies which cover the General symptom of Becoming Cold Aggravates.  There are 110 remedies in the General symptom of Change of Weather Aggravates.

Here are a few of the more helpful, weather related acute care remedies that you might need.

imgp4676webDulcamara:  Minnesota has the perfect fall weather to create conditions under which Dulcamara will be required.  Illness that comes around with warm days and cool nights, such as we are experiencing now (Fall, 2016) frequently need Dulcamara.  This is especially true when the weather is also damp, such as we have had this fall as well.  This could be coughs, croup, general cold symptoms, illnesses involving the mucous membranes. in particular.  Dulcamara, along with several other remedies, also covers the symptom of diarrhea in autumn.

You could also use Dulcamara prophylactically.  Since it is a common remedy that people are needing this fall, a couple 30C doses just might help ward whatever is going around.

Aconite:  When the weather gets bitter cold in the winter, make sure you have some Aconite 30c and 200c handy. (You might need to get the 200c from a homeopathic practitioner.)  If you get exposed to the bitter cold Minnesota winter winds, and then rapidly develop a high fever or a cold, Aconite will help.  This fever or cold is generally accompanied by a great deal of fear and anxiety, that something akin to death will occur…soon.  Aconite won’t be the last remedy needed in a situation like this, but a few doses will get you through the worst of it.

Rhus Tox:  This remedy has so many weather related symptoms, that it would be nearly impossible to write about all of them.  Rhus Tox is an arthritis remedy, among other things.  The symptoms are generally better in the summer, when the weather is warm and sunny.  On the other hand, when it we are experiencing cloudy, overcase or foggy weather, symptoms may appear or may get worse. Rhus Tox symptoms come on often in autumn. Rhus Tox headaches, for example, may appear with damp weather, before or during a storm, or when the weather changes.  A confirmatory symptom would be that the headache (or any symptom) is better with motion.  Most of us prefer to lie down with a headache.  But if you feel better moving around, consider Rhus Tox.

If the weather is literally getting you down, consider homeopathy.  Give a call.

7 Remedies To Have On Hand For Hot Weather

We are moving into the hottest weather of the year.  It is not too late to get these remedies and keep them handy with the instructions on what to take, just in case you need them.

hea-exhaustion-and-heat-strokeSunstroke can be dangerous, and we certainly don’t want anything to get elevated to that level.  Prevention is the best cure for Heat Exhaustion, Heat Stroke or Sunstroke.  If it is too hot for you, stay indoors in the air conditioning.  If you don’t have air conditioning, go to a movie just to cool down.

It is also important to replenish your electrolytes.  Everyone thinks of Gatorade, but that is really not a very healthy option, nor is it the least expensive option.

To make your own electrolyte beverage, Squeeze the juice of one lemon and one lime into a Quart Jar.  Add 1/8 tsp Sea Salt or Pink Himalayan salt.  If you want it sweet, you could add some honey.  I don’t do that.  Then fill to the top with clean, filtered (if you have it) water and ice. Shake well. You could add different fruit, strawberries instead of limes, for example. You could also blend watermelon and limes with the salt and ice. You might want to use the blender if you are using chunky fruit.

If You Can’t Prevent It….

But sometimes, we overdo it and we need help.  Below are some good remedies for when you get overheated. These are all common remedies and are available in 30C at most health food stores and other places where remedies are sold. Most are also in remedy kits, but Glonoinum and Natrum Carbonicum may not be.  Please note that if the patient is suffering from Sunstroke, this is a medical emergency.  The remedies do not replace a trip to the doctor.  Give them on the way to the doctor.

Aconite:  Sunstroke that comes on rapidly with great intensity.  There is strong sensitivity to light and a headache.  The pupils will be constricted.  Worse from falling asleep in the sun. The patient may fear that they will die.

Belladonna:  Use this when you have a pounding, throbbing headache with a red face.  The body may be cold or just the hands and feet might be cold. The face will be warm to hot.  If you have no other, give Belladonna if it is close to fitting the situation and symptoms presented.

Carbo Vegetabilis:  Weakness and collapse after exposure to the heat and sun.  Fainting from heat exhaustion.  The patient may be cold and clammy and has nausea.  Diarrhea after exposure to the heat and sun.

Gelsemium:  Weak and tremulous after exposure to the sun.  Face flush and head is congested.  Vertigo and dizziness. Headache on the top of the head.  May have an attitude of not caring about anything.

Glonoinum:  Violent throbbing or bursting headache with a flushed face and visible pulsation of the carotid arteries.  Vertigo, dizziness, hot dry skin, frequent urination, drowziness.  May be confused about location. Better wearing a hat.

Natrum Carbonicum:  Weakness after walking in the sun.  Confusion and vertigo after exposure to the sun.  Heaviness and dullness in the head. Severe headache after exposure to the sun, especially if there is a history of heat exhaustion.

Natrum Muriaticum: Thirsty, mouth is very dry.  Sparks in front of the eyes.  You feel really dehydrated.  I have used this many times for clients and family.

How to Dose the Remedies

If you use the Boiron remedies in the blue tubes from the store, 2-3 pellets is a dose.  Otherwise, follow the instructions included with the remedy.  If the patient is just overheated, give as needed, perhaps 1x an hour until they feel better.  If it is Sunstroke, give a 30c dose every 5 – 10 minutes on your way to the doctor.

Chronic Overheating

If you have a history of chronic overheating or sunstroke, this will require a constitutional remedy.  Please schedule your appointment today.

Why I am not afraid of Measles

Okay.  Raise your hand.  How many of you were wondering when I would write a post on this topic, given the current hysteria about measles?

My goal in this entry is not to ramp up the hysteria, but to talk about measles, homeopathy, how you can be helped if you or your child gets the measles and how you can protect yourself in a safer, yet effective way.

Homeopathy and the Measles

designHomeopathy has been around for a couple of hundred years, fewer years than the measles have been around to be sure.  But many people used to turn to homeopathy to get through a case of the measles. (Why it is less common now days is a topic for a future blog or ten.)  So I did a quick search through my homeopathic repertory of symptoms and found 126 measles symptoms.  They not only included skin symptoms which describe the measles (there are several ways the eruptions can be expressed), but it also describes some of the complications of measles.  For example, there are remedies recommended for suppressed measles, the type of fever with the measles, pain in extremities, sleeplessness due to measles, coughs with measles, hoarseness with measles, measles in the mouth, etc.  Because they appear in the repertory, and these are clinical symptoms, there is a history of helping people who have the measles and display these symptoms.  Thus, I am not concerned about measles, as people with this dis-ease are readily helped with homeopathy.

As I look through the general measles symptoms, there are 89 remedies.  Many of these remedies are available in your local coop, health food store, etc.  Certainly the most common ones are also in remedy kits that you may have at home.

A Little History of Measles

Isn’t the word “measles” a funny word?  Say it a few times.  It is strange indeed.  Wanting to know from whence it came, I searched online.  Here’s what I found.  The Middle English maseles, is probably from Middle Dutch masel  meaning ‘pustule’ (compare with modern Dutch mazelen ‘measles’). The spelling change was due to association with Middle English mesel ‘leprous, leprosy.’

What?  Leprosy?  Well, no wonder the hysteria. The disease Leprosy carries with it a great deal of fear.  Banishment from the public, highly contagious, almost certain death, dying alone.  (Yes there are also remedies for Leprosy.)

Even if people are unaware of this relationship, the response has been the same.  “Put the parents in jail if their kids aren’t vaccinated.”  “Send unvaccinated children to Guantanamo Bay.” “Keep the children out of school.”  The word Leprosy, and it’s related words, carry a meta-physical property of fear with it.  Interestingly, there is a Homeopathic symptom of Fear of everything, accompanied by measles that don’t come out.  In other words, someone has been exposed to the measles, probably has a fever, but the spots won’t appear. An accompanying symptom is fear of everything. The one and only remedy in that symptom is Stramonium, which is one of the most fearful remedies in the Homeopathic Materia Medica.

However, Measles is not Leprosy, although Main Stream Media (MSM) would like us to believe it is.  Leprosy is a chronic disease, Measles is acute, which means it is self-limiting.  I had the measles, as did all my siblings.  We all survived, none the worse for it, and probably better because of it.  Until the advent of the measles vaccine, it was considered a mild disease, a right of passage, so to speak, of being a child.

Protecting Yourself Against the Measles

design (1)First:  Do NOT buy into the fear mongering.  Over the last decade, there have been many fear mongering attempts by MSM.  The Swine Flu (H1N1), The Bird Flu, Ebola, just to name a few.  How many of those attempts at scaring us turned into anything close to the magnitude predicted?  Exactly zero.  Kind of like the weather forecasters and their over-predicting storms.  (A prediction of more than a couple inches of snow is the kiss of death for a good old fashioned snow storm.)  Furthermore, fear mongering just causes anxiety in others, which makes them more susceptible to all sorts of dis-ease, including measles.

Second:  Homeopathic Prophylaxis for measles. Homeopathy has been protecting against the onset of dis-ease for over 200 years. There are a couple of ways that we can use remedies to educate the immune system.

One method is the use of homeopathic nosodes.  Nosodes are remedies made out of disease tissue.  The virus from measles was cultured or the sputum and/or open sores of someone with measles was turned into a remedy.  The measles nosode is only available from a homeopathic practitioner.  It is not sold in stores.  This form of prophylaxis can protect against dis-ease for both long and short term, as it gives an energetic experience of the dis-ease, thus educating the immune system.

Using the nosode is not the only way homeopathy can be utilized.  You can also take the Genus Epidemicus, or the remedy that most people need when measles is “going around”.  Of course, we don’t know what it is, because as far as I know, none of the 108 people who got the measles went to a homeopath.  But if they did, we might see a pattern.  It could be Arsenicum, Aconite, Pulsatilla, Ferrum Phos, Gelsemium, and others–again, commonly found in health food stores and coops. These are listed as remedies for prophylaxis in the Repertory. I would choose Aconite, as it fits the general hysteria that is going around the country.  People who need Aconite are certain they will die.  That is how people are viewing measles. Aconite is also more commonly needed in cold weather than warm weather.  We are fortunate that it is a mild winter in the midwest.

However, identifying the genus epidemicus can be tricky, especially when the virus is manufactured in a laboratory. (Notice I said “might” above.)  The CDC has been suspiciously quiet about whether the measles virus that is “sweeping” the nation is the wild virus or the vaccine virus.  Believe it or not, they are not the same.  So to be safe, I would take the Nosode.

Fear of Flying and Other Trauma in Airplanes

The vacation is over, as is the poor internet connections, which prevented me from posting as often as I had planned.

Trauma in an airplane--helped by Homeopathy

On the way home, my sons, 12 and 15, got to sit together in the very back row of the plane.  My husband and I were split apart.  My kids got to sit next to someone who normally got sick while flying.  YAY!.  Glad it was them and not me.  Apparently the poor fellow spent at least 45 minutes in the bathroom during the 2 hour flight.

Had he been fortunate enough to be sitting next to a homeopath who had her remedy kit handy in the plane (that would be me), the homeopath would have considered these remedies.

First, if the issue was related to the up and down motion of the airplane, which one can experience during turbulence, take offs and landings, I would have given him Borax.  This is a remedy that has the symptom of being worse from up and down motion.  Another remedy to consider for motion sickness is Cocculus indicus.  I believe I mentioned this as a jet lag remedy, but it is also a great remedy for motion sickness in airplanes and boats.  There are actually 61 remedies for nausea caused by motion.  Another one to consider is  Nux Vomica, a good all purpose remedy, especially for nausea from over indulgence.  So if too many drinks at the airport bar was the source of the distress–and this is not too far a stretch if the fellow was nervous about flying and wanted to calm his nerves–Nux Vomica would be the first choice.  If anxiety about potential death and chills were in the picture, try Arsenicum.  Homeopathic Tobacco, or Tabaccum, is another motion sickness remedy.  This remedy is also very chilly, but feels more distressed by the illness than by the thought of possibly dying in a plane crash. Like a child who sneaks his dad’s cigarettes, it also includes dizziness along with the nausea.

Sometimes it is hard to separate fear of flying from motion sickness.  There are many remedies for fear of flying, and it really depends on what the fear is about.  If you are certain that death is imminent, consider Aconite before the flight and during the flight.  If the fear of death includes nausea and chills, consider Arsenicum.  Argentum nitricum, common name Silver nitrate, is a remedy for fear of flying that would also include claustrophobia.  Aconite also has this symptom, but the emphasis is on death in Aconite, where as the closed in spaces would be the prominent symptom in Argentum nitricum.  Arg Nit is a warm remedy as well.

Another option is Bach Rescue Remedy prior to and during the flight.  You could also have someone familiar with Bach Flowers to mix a customized blend of Bach flowers to match your situations and symptoms.

There are many possibilities to help make your flight more enjoyable, short of drinking yourself into oblivion before and during the flight. If these options don’t help or match your symptoms, call a professional homeopath to help.

Can Weather Affect Your Health?

Everyone knows the story of an elderly relative whose arthritis acts up when rain is coming.  But largely, Western Medicine ignores weather as a factor in either health or illness.

Change of seasons can affect your health

In homeopathy, it is different.  We are just moving out of what has been a fabulous autumn in Minnesota.  Warm Days and Warm Nights.  Fall is a typical month for the remedy Dulcamara, which has the symptom of being worse with Warm Days and Cool Nights.  In 2010, I recommended Dulcamara many times.  In 2011, where the nights didn’t cool off so much, I recommended it perhaps twice.  This remedy could be used for digestive disorders, coughs, colds, any acute illness that comes on under those weather conditions.

Another important remedy to keep in mind with winter coming up is Aconite.  An Aconite state produces a high fever and anxiety about their illness, being certain that they will be dying soon.  The weather condition that is most likely to produce this state is cold, windy weather.  I’ve seen children and adults, who are exposed to cold wind, develop a high fever and need Aconite for ear infections, bronchitis, and even pneumonia.

Anyone who lives in the Northern climate knows that the lack of sunshine can cause depression all winter long.  This is sometimes known as Seasonal Affective Disorder.  I call it the winter blues.  Light boxes are an option and can make things better.  The Homeopathic Materia Medica lists 58 remedies under the symptom, General Weather, Cloudy, Aggravates.  I am fairly certain this is not an exhaustive list, however.

Change of seasons can bring up all sorts of pathology, acute or chronic.  One remedy that has this symptom is Rhus Tox.  It is a common remedy for injuries that are better from heat.  Most of the remedies in the symptom General, Seasons, Autumn, Aggravates are remedies that are better from heat.  Most of us probably also would not be surprised to find that the season that aggravates more people is Winter, followed by Summer, Spring and then Autumn.  So we are in the best time of year, health wise.

So if you are dreading the approach of a new season, whether it is the season itself or just the transition to a new season, homeopathy can help you through it.

Emergency Medicine: What Homeopathy Offers–Part 1

Arnica Montana for Trauma

Earlier this week I discussed some Natural Health viewpoints of western medicine.  The view of Emergency Medicine is different.  Most Natural Health providers find ER doctors and nurses to be amazing life savers.  It takes a certain type of person to work in an Emergency Room.  You have to have a clear head and be confident in your skills.  A panicky nurse or doctor won’t be very successful working in a crisis environment.  (Remember this:   a crisis isn’t what happens, it is how you react to what happens.)

However, there are a few homeopathic remedies that should be staples in the Emergency Room that would improve outcomes for the patients.

The first remedy is, you guessed it, Arnica montana.  Arnica is a remedy with no equal when it comes to dealing with trauma such as a car accident, a broken limb, etc.  Studies have shown it to not only be effective in easing pain without the use of narcotics, but also helping people heal faster.  One study was done on Arnica and plastic surgery.  People’s perception of how quickly they healed did not show any difference between those who got Arnica and those who didn’t.  But digital photos of the patients showed a significant difference when the photos were enlarged and the pixels of the bruised skin were examined and counted.  The bruising on the Arnica patients healed more quickly. Of course, no one ever heals quickly enough when they have had cosmetic surgery.  This is not a study on a traumatic situation, but the skin was still traumatized by the surgery.

Aconite for anticipating death

Aconite should be used in all Emergency Rooms, but especially in Pediatric ER’s.  The feeling of Aconite is one of panic.  The symptom is “Can Name Their Time of Death.”  When a child goes to an ER or to have surgery, they frequently feel like they are going to die.  Even my son would need Aconite when he accidentally ate nuts or peanuts, his throat started to close, and he began to think he would die.  Within minutes, he was much better.  Because it is such an intense state, we must match the state with the potency and have high potency (1M, 10M, 50M) doses available.  Children’s hospitals have social workers, nurses and others working to calm children before they have surgery.  Think how much easier it would be to give them some Aconite so they can calm down on their own, rather than having to be talked into being calm.

There are many other emergency remedies, which we will discuss in Part 2.

There are many important elements in making the presence of remedies in the ER successful.  First, the people who would be dispensing the remedies need to be well trained.  They need to know what to look for, learn the symptoms of the remedies, what potency to give, and how often.

Second, many different potencies of the remedies would need to be made available.

Third, the ER staff would have to buy into the idea of using the remedies.  The cost savings would be significant and the outcomes improved.  That would be a place to start.

Cold Weather Brings New Illnesses

Don't let winter get you down. Feel Better Fast

The cold, windy weather has brought out some illnesses in those exposed to the weather. Just recently, I have heard of TWO people who became ill by being in the cold windy weather. One remedy to consider in this situation is Aconite. Any high fever that comes on quickly, especially if you have been exposed to cold, windy weather may respond well to Aconite. Along with the fever there is probably some anxiety about whether you will survive the illness.
