Emergency Medicine: What Homeopathy Offers–Part 1

Arnica Montana for Trauma

Earlier this week I discussed some Natural Health viewpoints of western medicine.  The view of Emergency Medicine is different.  Most Natural Health providers find ER doctors and nurses to be amazing life savers.  It takes a certain type of person to work in an Emergency Room.  You have to have a clear head and be confident in your skills.  A panicky nurse or doctor won’t be very successful working in a crisis environment.  (Remember this:   a crisis isn’t what happens, it is how you react to what happens.)

However, there are a few homeopathic remedies that should be staples in the Emergency Room that would improve outcomes for the patients.

The first remedy is, you guessed it, Arnica montana.  Arnica is a remedy with no equal when it comes to dealing with trauma such as a car accident, a broken limb, etc.  Studies have shown it to not only be effective in easing pain without the use of narcotics, but also helping people heal faster.  One study was done on Arnica and plastic surgery.  People’s perception of how quickly they healed did not show any difference between those who got Arnica and those who didn’t.  But digital photos of the patients showed a significant difference when the photos were enlarged and the pixels of the bruised skin were examined and counted.  The bruising on the Arnica patients healed more quickly. Of course, no one ever heals quickly enough when they have had cosmetic surgery.  This is not a study on a traumatic situation, but the skin was still traumatized by the surgery.

Aconite for anticipating death

Aconite should be used in all Emergency Rooms, but especially in Pediatric ER’s.  The feeling of Aconite is one of panic.  The symptom is “Can Name Their Time of Death.”  When a child goes to an ER or to have surgery, they frequently feel like they are going to die.  Even my son would need Aconite when he accidentally ate nuts or peanuts, his throat started to close, and he began to think he would die.  Within minutes, he was much better.  Because it is such an intense state, we must match the state with the potency and have high potency (1M, 10M, 50M) doses available.  Children’s hospitals have social workers, nurses and others working to calm children before they have surgery.  Think how much easier it would be to give them some Aconite so they can calm down on their own, rather than having to be talked into being calm.

There are many other emergency remedies, which we will discuss in Part 2.

There are many important elements in making the presence of remedies in the ER successful.  First, the people who would be dispensing the remedies need to be well trained.  They need to know what to look for, learn the symptoms of the remedies, what potency to give, and how often.

Second, many different potencies of the remedies would need to be made available.

Third, the ER staff would have to buy into the idea of using the remedies.  The cost savings would be significant and the outcomes improved.  That would be a place to start.

What Do You Think Of….? Part 2

One of the big disagreements between natural health practitioners, such as homeopaths and acupuncturists, and western medicine doctors isn’t whether or not western medicine drugs suppress symptoms.  The disagreement is whether suppressing symptoms is problematic or not.  They largely say it is not.  We say it is.

Dis-ease is like a vine

How many of you know of someone who has taken a medication, only to develop additional symptoms.  Eczema?  Here’s some cortisone creme.  What happens a few months later?  Asthma perhaps?  I’ve seen it.  I had a client a long time ago who had asthma.  She received a remedy that matched her current symptoms.  To my surprise, she called me between appointments to tell me that some warts on her fingers had returned.  It had been hard to keep them suppressed, and she had had several appointments to get them frozen off.  The interesting thing is that when the warts returned, the asthma went away.  It took until we could give her a stronger dose of her remedy for the warts to disappear completely.  But she was happy to have the warts in the mean time rather than the asthma.

Many people’s lives have been saved by Western Pharmaceuticals, and this should not be disregarded.  However, there is a time and a place for them. Sometimes symptoms spiral out of control and it becomes a game of Whack-a-Mole.

Think of your dis-ease as a very tall pole, and ll your symptoms as vines growing up the pole.  if you cut down the vines, they will grow back again.  If you cut down all the vines, it also allows new and different vegetation to take hold and grow up the vine.  The suppressive approach taken by western medicine is analogous to cutting the vines down.  If you stop the medicine, the vines grow back.  If you continue the medicine, you allow new growth in the form of new symptoms.  Then you need an additional medicine to cut down the new vines.

By contrast, homeopathy aims to remove the pole.  If the vines have no where to grow, they will die.

In life, it is much easier and faster to snip down a vine than to cut down a pole.  The attraction of suppressing the symptoms and having instant relief is clear.  However, homeopathic remedies can work with amazing speed–sometimes within seconds.  The waiting that occurs is the time it takes for your body to heal itself.

What Can Homeopathy Do?

I am often asked exactly what homeopathy can do.  For a longer list, I recommend going to my website at www.lotushomeopathy.com and click on Can You Help Me.  Don’t click on any of the submenu items just yet.  By clicking on Can You Help Me, the website will display a list of categories of things that homeopathy has been known to assist with.

It isn’t very often that I can actually SHOW the effects of homeopathy.

A bad case of Lazy Eye--before

After he received the correct remedy, the eye improved rather drastically within 3 days or so and continued to improve regularly after subsequent doses of the remedy and after different remedies.

No surgery needed.  This is a good thing, because those surgeries don’t always work, in spite of their long history.

What Remedy Does Adele Need?

Adele

This morning I read that British singing sensation Adele has cancelled her US tour because, once again, she has laryngitis.  The bluesy singer twice postponed her appearance here in Minnesota but was finally able to give a concert which received good reviews.  I also read that her vocal chords were hemorrhaging.  Yikes!

That is such an interesting symptom, I just had to look it up.  Much to my dismay, there were only a couple small remedies listed and it was in related symptoms.  There is not a symptom of the Larynx bleeding.

So where do we start if we can’t find her most peculiar symptom?  First, related to her most recent cancellation, she said, “Singing is literally my life. It’s my hobby, my love, my freedom and now my job.”

A couple months ago I read an article about her in Rolling Stone magazine. The gist of the article, as it relates to homeopathy, is that she has performance anxiety, aka stage fright, so much so that she will throw up at times from anxiety. “I have anxiety attacks a lot,” she reported. She has a  foul mouth, dropping the F-Bomb and tells filthy jokes on stage. I do not know her motivation for that, but given she is a performer, I would think about the drama of it and the impact it has on others. Perhaps she likes to shock others.  The other important thing to know about Adele when trying to determine a remedy for her is that she is a smoker. This always creates additional problems.  She needs to quit.

Because of her strong feelings about music and singing, we need to first look at remedies that come from the 5th row of the periodic table.  These are the artists, musicians, athletes, attorneys–people who perform. There are 70 or so stage fright remedies, and a few from row 5.

I would also include Inflammation of the Larynx from over use.

So putting the following together, an artist/musician, anxiety attacks, stage fright, cursing, and laryngitis from overuse of her voice, the remedy that comes up first is Argentum Nitricum, which is Silver Nitrate.  It is a very well known remedy in homeopathy and pretty common for musicians and people who have stage fright and fear of heights (don’t know that she talked about that).   It also suits her body type, which is a bit on the plump side from enjoying fine food and wine, to which she also confesses. It also has an affinity for the throat.

Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day

Because Argentum Nitricum does not cover the cursing, I would not be completely comfortable with that remedy.  Another possibility for Adele is the remedy Antimonium Crudum.  Also in the 5th row of the periodic table, they can be very romantic (which she is) and wear romantic clothing.  She also has romantic relationship issues (the Sulphur in this remedy) and likes to be shocking.  The shocking could also appear as a punk rocker, such as Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day.  If you have been to a concert, you would know that shocking is definitely part of his persona.  Contrary, shocking, very talented.

Fortunately for Adele, she comes from Great Britain, where homeopathy is popular and thriving.  Hopefully she will go back to her British roots and see a classical homeopath at home.

Head Injuries and Homeopathy

Have you noticed how head injuries are finally getting the notice and attention they deserve?  They are very serious and can result in life changing effects, for both the person who got the injury and their family.

Some of the effects of a head injury are often not noticeable or aren’t attributed to the head injury.  Sometimes there is permanent damage to the brain, other times it heals on its own.

On March 22, 2011, the Star Tribune carried a story about a man who went on a killing rampage.  Just weeks before, he had been hospitalized for five days due to a brain injury.  His brain had been swollen. His family members attributed the drastic change in behavior to his having been hit over the head.

Athletes, whether professional or amateur, are prime candidates for injuries. Just this fall there were four concussions in one week in the NFL.  Former NFL player, Dave Duerson committed suicide but not before he officially donated his brain to the NFL Brain Bank for research on concussions in football. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/23/dave-duerson-autopsy-repo_n_839629.html?utm_source=Triggermail&utm_medium=email&utm_term=Daily+Brief&utm_campaign=daily_brief Kurt Warner quit playing football because of multiple concussions (lets admit it, he was also getting old).

MN Twins player Justin Morneau recently came back from missing most of last season due to a concussion. Female athletes are more likely to suffer long term effects of a concussion because they tend to minimize their injuries.  This is commonly believed to be due to the fact that they don’t want to be seen as week.

My friend and chiropractor, Dan Barrett, showed me an article many years ago about a study done on soccer players.  MRI’s showed that players who headed the ball with the top of their head had more negative effects to the brain than those who headed the ball with the front part of their head and forehead.  Although heading the ball as a single event is generally not traumatic enough to cause a problem, there is a cumulative effect from heading that should not be ignored.

What does all this have to do with Homeopathy? I’m glad you asked.

Homeopathy has had many solutions to head and brain injuries since the time of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the man who founded the principals of homeopathy in the 1800’s.

Let’s start with the most obvious remedy, that you can and SHOULD administer on your own.  Arnica Montana.  Arnica is a mountain daisy, related to the daisies you may have growing in your own yard.  Arnica has been used in folk medicine for centuries.  It’s healing properties were first discovered when astute herbalists noticed that the sheep and goats that live in the mountains would eat it after fighting or falling down on the rocks.  It is a premier remedy for trauma.  Hahnemann turned it into a homeopathic remedy.  If my children are doing a lot of heading in a soccer game or at practice, I have them take a dose or two of Arnica 30C afterwards, just to prevent that cumulative effect I mentioned earlier. But a serious injury requires a stronger dose of Arnica–200C or 1M or even more.  If all you can locate is 30C, give it every 10 minutes in case of a serious injury, until you notice some improvement, or until you can locate some stronger Arnica.  One thing to be aware of:  One of the symptoms of Arnica is that the person who needs it may insist they are fine and they do NOT need anything.

If you need assistance or stronger Arnica, call Kathryn at 651-748-1556.

What happens after Arnica?  Or what if you didn’t know about homeopathy at the time of the injury?  What does homeopathy have to offer those people?

Arnica may help, it may not.  However, this is not the time to experiment on your own.  If you or someone you know has had a brain injury, this is the time to get professional help from a trained homeopath.

Homeopathy has 50 remedies, including Arnica, that have clinical evidence of helping head and brain injuries. The following are some of the more well known remedies.

Helleborus is a well named remedy, because the state it helps is very “hellish”.  One of the more prominent symptoms of this remedy is that the person who needs it knows what they want to say, but they cannot get it out.  What they say may seem incoherent.  Obviously, this could be a stroke or Alzheimer’s remedy as well.  There is a great deal of confusion and anxiety.  The latin name for this flower is Helleborus Niger, which means it is a black flower.  The delusions of this flower are very dark indeed–delusions seeing ghosts, devils, phantoms, specters, etc.  Understandably, they have a fear of all things evil.

Hypericum is a remedy you may know better as St. John’s Wort.  Hypericum is known in homeopathy as a remedy for nerve pain and nerve injuries.  Smashed fingers, neuralgic pain from dental work all respond well to Hypericum.  Since the brain is the driver if the Central Nervous System, it makes sense that it could also help a brain injury.  Hypericum would be used if the injured individual has a sensation of being lifted, can also see ghosts, and has a fear of downward motion.  They will also have a loss of memory and make mistakes in speaking and spelling, perhaps omitting letters and/or words.  There may be some shooting pains in the extremities as well.

Depression after a head injury is quite common.  Homeopathy has several remedies for that as well.  Natrum sulphuricum is one such remedy.  There will be a lot of grief associated with the injury and may have other mental symptoms from the injury. The sadness may be associated with a loss of honor due to an inability to perform a task one used to be able to perform.  The person needing it may exhibit suicidal tendencies after the head injury.  Frequent spells of unconsciousness after a head injury points to this remedy as well.

Conium and Cicuta Virosa are also known as remedies that help those who are suffering sadness after depression.  Both are from the Umbelliferae family which has a common symptom among all of them that they aren’t included or liked as well as they used to be.

There are many, many more remedies that can be used for head and brain injuries.  Start with Arnica if the injury is new.  If not, call Kathryn at 651-748-1556 to get on the path to healing.

Remedies for Bad Boys

As long as everyone is into bashing Charlie Sheen (he did paint an awfully big target on his chest), it seems time to present a more compassionate view of his behavior, using a homeopathic perspective.

Let’s be clear.  Homeopathy does not condone or excuse his behavior.  But he is dropping homeopathic symptoms all over the place.

When one listens to his talking about his current life style, and how his wild behavior was a gift to viewers and participants, it is hard to ignore the thrill-seeking he is exhibiting.  It appears that he thinks everyone else wants as many thrills as he does.  His producer said that he has an empty soul.  My first thought was the remedy Medorrhinum.  Many a wild homeopathic client has been helped with this remedy. The type of thrill seeking can vary.  For example, thrill seeking that includes Extreme Sports may be

Thrill Seeker!

exhibited. It can also be drugs, sex and rock and roll.  For the people who need this remedy, it can be difficult to continue to take it.  When the desire for exhilaration diminishes, they often don’t know what to do with themselves. They are bored.  It becomes a spiritual issue.

Another possible remedy is Hyoscyamus.  This remedy, in the same plant family as potatoes and tomatoes, can display a lot of deviant behavior.

Has anyone watched the old television sit com Cheers?  The character Sam Malone bears some resemblance to Charlie Sheen.  This character needs the remedy Fluoric Acid.  The fluorides and other remedies in that column of the periodic table belong to the group referred to as the Halogens.  People who need Halogen remedies make and break bonds with others regularly, just as the Halogens make and break bonds in their material state.  Fluoric Acid in particular has a difficult time establishing a strong bond with any one person.  They think everything is just fine.  They don’t recognize problems.

There are many other Bad Boy and Bad Girl remedies.  The important thing from the homeopathic perspective is that it is very difficult for these people to restrain themselves without a good homeopathic remedy.  Just as it is hard for a rule bound person to break out of their need for structure, it is equally difficult for a wild child, Bad Boy to tame himself a bit.

When someone who has allegedly been sober and clean for a number of years begins to drink or use again, they decompensate quickly.  This means that all the skills and strength he or she had exhibited previously becomes inaccessible to him or her. The behavior may become even worse than it had been.  This is also true of a very structured person.  If he has learned to relax, and them some incident occurs which perhaps frightens them, they may become even more controlling and structured than they had been.   Homeopathy can help.

If you or someone you know needs a little taming or a little revving up, call Lotus Homeopathy at 651-748-1556 to see what we can do for you.

Spring Brings New Health Complaints

I remember when I was young, there was a boy in my class who got pneumonia several years in a row in the spring.  He’d always miss a week or more of school.

Spring can bring on allergy symptoms.

Many years later, when I had my own children, one of them ended up getting Bronchitis and Pneumonia two years in a row in the spring.  By then I knew about homeopathy and knew enough to pay attention to the timing.  Was this a pattern developing?

When I look in my homeopathic Repertory (a book of symptoms), I see that the symptom of Spring Aggravates has 52 remedies.  The remedy my young son needed at that time is listed among the 52. He has not had any Spring respiratory issues since taking that remedy several times over the course of a year.

Also listed are several remedies made from various Snakes.  Since snakes tend to hibernate in the Winter, it isn’t a surprise that the Spring weather might cause health issues for people needing those remedies.  How would you feel after being awakened from a 3 month nap?

Spring is also a time of Allergies.  Homeopathy has much to offer to relieve Spring allergies and prevent them from coming back the next year. I personally used to have Spring allergies, Fall allergies and Cat allergies.  Now, some mild sneezing in spring and fall is all I experience.  I even stayed a couple days with a cousin who has a cat and was perfectly fine.

One very common remedy for acute allergies is Sabadilla.  The main symptom indicating this remedy is copious sneezing.  Another remedy to consider is Allium Cepa.  This is for a very watery, runny nose accompanied by sneezing.  There are many more.  If these symptoms match yours, take the remedy in a 30C as needed.

Interestingly, if you have chronic allergies, the remedy you use this season, may not work next year at the same time.  A constitutional remedy can help you conquer your allergies.  Allergies are one of the most common ailments for which someone seeks homeopathic care.  So join the rest of the former allergy sufferers and get help for your self and your family.

For help with your upcoming Spring Allergies, call Kathryn at 651-748-1556.
