Can The Weather Make You Sick?

In a word:  Yes.

Many medical professionals will say things like, “You can’t get a cold by being cold.”  Or, “There is no evidence that the weather can make you sick.”  Wrong and Wrong.

Anyone who says that weather has no influence on whether you get sick or not, hasn’t studied homeopathy.

imgp4696webThe most obvious symptoms arise when someone is anxious about the weather.  Stormy weather can cause a good deal of anxiety in some people, which can lead to physical symptoms.  Warm weather can make people apathetic and not want do their work.  And of course, Seasonal Affective Disorder, wide spread in Minnesota in the winter, can cause the blues on cloudy days.

Physically, there are many weather related illnesses.  Everyone probably has an aunt or a friend who can predict the weather due to physical pains that pop up just before the rain or other damp conditions.  Skin conditions such as eczema can get worse in summer or winter, depending on the constitutional homeopathic remedy a person needs.

Children often get ear infections, or pain in the ears if their heads aren’t covered properly in the winter. People get tooth aches if the weather is damp or cold.

There are countless homeopathic symptoms that are weather related.  Well, not really countless.  There are 1027  homeopathic symptoms with the word “weather” associated with them.  There are 144 remedies which cover the General symptom of Becoming Cold Aggravates.  There are 110 remedies in the General symptom of Change of Weather Aggravates.

Here are a few of the more helpful, weather related acute care remedies that you might need.

imgp4676webDulcamara:  Minnesota has the perfect fall weather to create conditions under which Dulcamara will be required.  Illness that comes around with warm days and cool nights, such as we are experiencing now (Fall, 2016) frequently need Dulcamara.  This is especially true when the weather is also damp, such as we have had this fall as well.  This could be coughs, croup, general cold symptoms, illnesses involving the mucous membranes. in particular.  Dulcamara, along with several other remedies, also covers the symptom of diarrhea in autumn.

You could also use Dulcamara prophylactically.  Since it is a common remedy that people are needing this fall, a couple 30C doses just might help ward whatever is going around.

Aconite:  When the weather gets bitter cold in the winter, make sure you have some Aconite 30c and 200c handy. (You might need to get the 200c from a homeopathic practitioner.)  If you get exposed to the bitter cold Minnesota winter winds, and then rapidly develop a high fever or a cold, Aconite will help.  This fever or cold is generally accompanied by a great deal of fear and anxiety, that something akin to death will occur…soon.  Aconite won’t be the last remedy needed in a situation like this, but a few doses will get you through the worst of it.

Rhus Tox:  This remedy has so many weather related symptoms, that it would be nearly impossible to write about all of them.  Rhus Tox is an arthritis remedy, among other things.  The symptoms are generally better in the summer, when the weather is warm and sunny.  On the other hand, when it we are experiencing cloudy, overcase or foggy weather, symptoms may appear or may get worse. Rhus Tox symptoms come on often in autumn. Rhus Tox headaches, for example, may appear with damp weather, before or during a storm, or when the weather changes.  A confirmatory symptom would be that the headache (or any symptom) is better with motion.  Most of us prefer to lie down with a headache.  But if you feel better moving around, consider Rhus Tox.

If the weather is literally getting you down, consider homeopathy.  Give a call.

The Longer I Ride, The Better I Feel…

Bill Walton was an NBA All-Star when I was a kid.  He was fun to watch.  Definitely a fan favorite.  But he was frequently injured and has spent much of his life in pain, according to an article in the April 21, 2016 edition of the Wall Street Journal.

WebP5261152Long since retired, he has become a bicycling aficionado, to say the least.  Even when he was a child, he loved riding his bicycle, to practice, back home, to school, and just for fun. Now as a retired athlete, he has a great deal of time to ride his bike and rides it many hours each day.  He feels more comfortable on his bike than any other activity in which he may participate.  “The longer I ride, the better I feel,” he says.  Unlike many former pro athletes, he takes no medication and has no pain.

That statement is a perfect summary of the remedy Bellis perennis.

Bellis perennis is a relative of Arnica montana.  So it has a lot to do with pain and trauma. Arnica is a mountain daisy.  Bellis is a common daisy, and it is well known for “old gardener’s injuries”, according to the old homeopathy books. Indeed, it is also a remedy for old football injuries, and perhaps old basketball injuries.

People who need Bellis perennis often say that once they start moving they feel better, but their first motion is very painful until they have gotten going.  This is also true of the remedy Rhus tox.

The difference between the two remedies lies in Bill Walton’s statement, “The longer I ride, the better I feel.”

Like Bellis perennis, Rhus tox feels worse on first motion and better on continued motion. But with Rhus tox, eventually, enough is enough and you feel worse again. With Bellis perennis, you can never move too much.  You just feel better and better as you keep moving.

Here is a summary of Bellis perennis:

Modalities for Bellis Perennis:

  • Pain better from continued motion. Rhus Tox also has this modality, but eventually you move too much with Rhus Tox and you must stop moving.  This is not true for Bellis Perennis.
  • Better from cold applications but worse from cold air or cold bathing.
  • Could also be better from Cold bathing, but generally always worse from cold air or wind.
  • Better from warm and warm applications.
  • The pain is worse than it seems it ought to be given the situation.

Here are some situations where you would choose Bellis Perennis over Arnica:

  • Injury to the Coccyx (Tailbone).
  • An old injury that has flared up. I had an old injury to the tailbone that reappeared with just a minor touch on the edge of a table I had bumped into.  It was much more painful than it seemed it should have been and it was better if I kept walking.  A week of Bellis Perennis 30c 3x a day made the injury disappear for good. This was several years ago.  I haven’t felt the pain since.
  • Recovering from surgery, especially deep surgery.
  • Abdominal surgery or injury.
  • Help speed recovery from any surgery.
  • Head Lice. (22 other remedies cover that symptom as well.)
  • When Arnica has ceased to work or simply isn’t working but seems like it should.
  • When you have left over pain and bruising (ecchymosis) from surgery or an injury that Arnica can’t heal.

Mental picture of Bellis Perennis:

Arnica often denies that anything is wrong.  This is not part of the picture of Bellis.  Bell-P has ritualistic behaviors, so when injured might be very structured and insist on doing things a certain way. They also might be slow to figure out what is going on. They are generally cheerful, and often compensate by being the tough guy (Compositae family).

I’m not trying to get Bill Walton to stop riding his bike, but he definitely could use a break from riding hours on end.  (See need for ritualistic activity, above.)  Several doses of Bellis perennis over time would definitely enable him to feel less pain and have a more multi-dimensional life.

Oddly, Bellis perennis is not readily available in the store.  So if you need some, please contact me.

A Homeopathy Success Story–Lesson Learned: Pay Attention to Symptoms

I recently had a repeat accident.  I burned my finger while cooking in oil.  This time I was on vacation and I had only 36 remedies to choose from.

It was EXTREMELY painful, so I took the same remedy that provided relief last time–Cantharis.  It is a good remedy for burns that are extremely painful and blister.  Read about that blog post here.

Cantharis was in the 36 remedy kit, so I was in luck…or so I thought.  It didn’t work, however.  We were fishing.  I was in the boat.  I had a bag of ice and a cooler of ice.  My burned finger felt great in the ice.  When I was busy, I noticed it didn’t hurt so much.  But waiting for those walleyes to bite was excruciating!  When I first started reeling in the line, it hurt, but the more I continued reeling and netting other’s fish, it felt much better.  I had observed even before we went out fishing that as long as I was walking around, it felt much better.

Rhus Tox, also known as Poison Ivy, with the smooth leaves. Leaves of three, let it be.

Rhus Tox, also known as Poison Ivy, with the smooth leaves. Leaves of three, let it be.

I thought of Rhus Tox which is a well known remedy. The symptoms of Rhus Tox include being worse from first motion and better from continued motion.  But generally Rhus Tox is better from heat, especially with Poison Ivy, and my finger was MUCH better from cold.  If I hadn’t had any way to look up the symptoms, I would have just taken it, but since I could look it up, I did.  It turns out that Rhus Tox also has the opposite symptom of being better from cold.  I took a dose.

Within 20 minutes, it was an order of magnitude better.  Later in the day I took another dose.  That was all.  Two doses.  Pain was gone.  The next day it had formed a blister.  Since then, the skin has all peeled off the burn and you cannot tell that it was even there.

I knew before I took the Cantharis that I was better from walking around (classic Rhus Tox symptom).  I should have paid attention to all my symptoms before deciding to use the remedy that worked best last time.  I would have had pain relief two hours earlier.

The Top Ten Natural Care Products–Part 2

As we move through the list of the Top Ten Natural Care Products, it is important to make clear the difference between acute ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????and chronic illness.  Acute illness is an illness that is self limiting.  You either get over it or you die from it.  Fortunately, if we are generally healthy, we live. For most people, having an acute illness actually makes your immune system stronger.  There is another option, which is that your body can’t quite shake it and you develop some type of chronic illness that is related to the acute illness.  For example, getting respiratory influenza and then developing asthma as an outcome. Fortunately, homeopathy can help prevent or mitigate that situation.  A chronic illness is one which goes on and on and on.  The experience of a chronic illness is not to make you stronger.  Rather, the outcome is the body gets weaker.

The remedies and other products included in my list are, in most cases, on the list due to their ability to handle acute situations. They may be injuries or it could be a contagious dis-ease.  Most also have a long term use as well, but those uses won’t be discussed in this series of blogs.

On to the next items:

4.     Bryonia 30C

Bryonia is a homeopathic remedy for pain when the pain is worse from motion and better from being stabilized with an ace bandage or a hand. You can imagine that Bryonia is an excellent remedy in the process of healing an injury. But it also is a good cough remedy, especially if you are experiencing pain with the cough, which is better when you lay on the sore spot, or put your hand on it.   A lot of people think that Arnica is the remedy for over doing it when exercising, but Bryonia frequently is a better choice. Bryonia is better from heat, which is a frequent modality for overuse injuries. It is also better from being alone.  The people who need it tend to be pretty irritable as well.  Fear of motion due to the anticipation of potential pain is also a symptom of Bryonia.

5.    Rhus Tox 30C

Poison Ivy, with the smooth leaves. Leaves of three, let it be.

Poison Ivy, with the smooth leaves. Leaves of three, let it be.

Rhus Tox is a homeopathic dose of Poison Ivy.  It is for injuries and illnesses that are worse for first motion and better from continued motion. This is in contrast to Bryonia, which is worse from all motion, not just first motion. People who need Rhus Tox are also chilly and are better from heat, often hot water or hot compresses, as opposed to warmth.  It is also a potential remedy for poison ivy, but generally you need several remedies in succession when exposed to poison ivy.

6.    Ledum 30c

Ledum is a homeopathic remedy made from the plant Ledum Palustre.  Ledum is useful for a number of things, but most especially, it is useful for puncture wounds.  Common examples of puncture wounds include biting your tongue, Getting an insect bite (yes, an insect bite is considered a puncture wound in homeopathy!), stepping on something sharp.

Stay tuned for more….

Remedies to Bring Along When You Travel

People ask all the time what remedies they should bring along on a trip.  Obviously, it depends on the time of year, where you are traveling, what you are doing, etc.

The first thing I recommend is that you buy a remedy kit for traveling.  This may or may not be the same kit you keep at home.  If you can have them hand checked, that would be best.  Many people I know replace the kits after they have been through an x-ray machine 8 – 10 times or so.  On the other hand, I have used the same kit for many years and it still works.

Ledum can help puncture wounds, such as you may get from stepping on a sea urchin barb.

Limiting it today to domestic travel, think about what could happen that would really ruin a trip.  Injuries, colds, influenza to start with.  A nice Homeopathy First Aid kit would be handy.  Arnica would naturally be a remedy I would recommend you bring on a trip.  30C and 200C at a minimum.  If you were to sprain an ankle, or sustain some other injury, it could really make a difference.

One remedy you may not think to bring is Ledum.  Ledum is a remedy for puncture wounds.  If you splash in the waves in Hawaii in your bare feet, you may step on a Sea Urchin barb.  The first thing the locals recommend for this situation is to soak your foot in your urine.  If you can’t stand the thought of that, take Ledum 30c, and ice the point of entry.  You will probably have to take several doses of Ledum.  You can take it as needed.  Another handy use for Ledum is if you bite your tongue.  People don’t think that as a particularly burdensome injury, but it can spoil your meals for a few days.  Young children in a crabby mood because they can’t eat could hamper the merriment as well.

Sunny weather often equals sunburn.  Obviously, Sunscreen is the best prevention.  But if you forget to put some one or you miss a spot, there are a few good options.  Calendula creme or ointment can help a mild sunburn applied topically as needed.  If you get a serious sunburn, Causticum or Cantharis could also help.

I recommend that my clients bring along their constitutional remedy in a 30C.  If you feel you are coming down with something, a couple doses of  30C of your constitutional remedy can help ward off a bug.  If you don’t know what your constitutional remedy is, give me a call.

I would also recommend Bryonia and Rhus Tox as well.  They are great injury remedies to follow Arnica.  Bryonia is good for injuries worse from motion.  Rhus Tox can help injuries that are worse on first motion but better on continued motion.

This won’t cover all situations that may arise, but it is a start.

Can Weather Affect Your Health?

Everyone knows the story of an elderly relative whose arthritis acts up when rain is coming.  But largely, Western Medicine ignores weather as a factor in either health or illness.

Change of seasons can affect your health

In homeopathy, it is different.  We are just moving out of what has been a fabulous autumn in Minnesota.  Warm Days and Warm Nights.  Fall is a typical month for the remedy Dulcamara, which has the symptom of being worse with Warm Days and Cool Nights.  In 2010, I recommended Dulcamara many times.  In 2011, where the nights didn’t cool off so much, I recommended it perhaps twice.  This remedy could be used for digestive disorders, coughs, colds, any acute illness that comes on under those weather conditions.

Another important remedy to keep in mind with winter coming up is Aconite.  An Aconite state produces a high fever and anxiety about their illness, being certain that they will be dying soon.  The weather condition that is most likely to produce this state is cold, windy weather.  I’ve seen children and adults, who are exposed to cold wind, develop a high fever and need Aconite for ear infections, bronchitis, and even pneumonia.

Anyone who lives in the Northern climate knows that the lack of sunshine can cause depression all winter long.  This is sometimes known as Seasonal Affective Disorder.  I call it the winter blues.  Light boxes are an option and can make things better.  The Homeopathic Materia Medica lists 58 remedies under the symptom, General Weather, Cloudy, Aggravates.  I am fairly certain this is not an exhaustive list, however.

Change of seasons can bring up all sorts of pathology, acute or chronic.  One remedy that has this symptom is Rhus Tox.  It is a common remedy for injuries that are better from heat.  Most of the remedies in the symptom General, Seasons, Autumn, Aggravates are remedies that are better from heat.  Most of us probably also would not be surprised to find that the season that aggravates more people is Winter, followed by Summer, Spring and then Autumn.  So we are in the best time of year, health wise.

So if you are dreading the approach of a new season, whether it is the season itself or just the transition to a new season, homeopathy can help you through it.

Homeopathic Alternatives to Tylenol–Part 2

Homeopathic Alternatives for Injuries

Arnica Montana:  This is a remedy for trauma, or anything that feels like trauma.  Aches and pains associated with overuse of muscles. It may hurt to move.  It will likely feel better with ice, but may feel better with warmth. The person who needs Arnica often feels they don’t need anything.  “I’m fine,

Headers in Soccer can cause injuires

really!!”  You may find it helpful after an athletic event to help the body heal itself.  Gardening in the spring after being housebound all winter.  Tripping and falling, bruising oneself, etc.  Arnica is great post-surgery, dental extractions, etc.  Always try Arnica first unless the symptoms are drastically different from Arnica symptoms.

Bryonia:  This is a remedy for anything that feels worse from movement and better from being wrapped.  Often the next remedy after Arnica. Fear of moving may be a component.  The person may be grumpy and wish to be left alone.  The person may be very restless, but the motion makes them worse.

Rhus Tox:  This is a remedy for any injury that feels worse on first motion, better on continued motion, but eventually gets worse from motion again.  Rhus Tox is better from heat—the hotter the better. One may be reminded of arthritis with this type of pain—where someone can’t quite open the jar in the morning, but once their fingers are nimble, they can open anything, until the end of the day.  (Indeed Rhus Tox is one of many arthritis remedies.)  The person may be very restless, and the motion makes them feel better.

Bellis Perennis:  This remedy is for deep trauma and bruises:  deep muscle injuries, abdominal or pelvic trauma, surgery, etc.  Worse from warm bathing, cold drinks, becoming cold.  Better:  Cold applications to the part.  Also a remedy for injuries and inflammation of the nerves.  It is difficult to find this remedy in a store, for some reason.

Hypericum:  Injuries to nerve rich areas—fingers, tongue, genitals.  Sharp pains shoot upward from injured spot.  Great for dental work where the pain feels more neuralgic than traumatic.

Conium:  Injuries, especially to the glands, such as testicles, breasts, etc.

Lachesis:  Serious bruises with throbbing, pulsing pains.  Bruises sells and turn rapidly a dark purple or even black in color.  Worse:  Any amount of heat.  Better:  Cold.

Ruta:  Bruises to the periosteum, where the bone is close to the surface, such as the tibia, iliac crest, etc.  Also good for shin splints, where wrapping aggravates the condition.

There are many more common injury remedies.  The important thing to know is that one size doesn’t fit all in homeopathy.  You must choose the correct, or close to correct, remedy, or it won’t work.

Headaches

One common use for over the counter pain relievers is for headaches.  I often get asked what to take for a headache.  Will Arnica work? Is the most common question.  Arnica may work, if you got hit in the head with something and as a result have a headache. Nux Vomica will work if you have a headache because you had too much to drink. Belladonna will work if you have a headache from being overheated and your face is really red.

But garden variety headaches that one gets frequently or even occasionally are considered chronic conditions and a constitutional consultation with a professional homeopath is required to resolve them.

For more information on using homeopathy instead of Tylenol, please consider taking one of my classes.  Go to my website to read more about upcoming classes.
