Today’s items could be called Lifestyle remedies.  You need them more often depending on the lifestyle you live.

7.    Nux Vomica 30C

Nux Vomica can help with overindulgence.

Nux Vomica can help with overindulgence.

Nux Vomica is a homeopathic remedy made from a nut. It’s most useful for the after effects of over indulgence. This could include too much food or too much drink. Take a dose of 30C before you go to bed, if you can remember, but for sure when you wake up in the morning.  In hearing of others use of this remedy, they find they not only feel better if they take it, they sleep better too.  If you take it in the morning, you may find you are able to fall back asleep again. I feel like Nux Vomica is the ultimate homeopathic remedy.  In General, homeopathy could be described as the “hair of the dog that bit you.”  And Nux vomica is a specific remedy for the “Hair of the dog that bit you.”

If you feel compelled to over indulge frequently, please seek constitutional care from a professional homeopath.

8.    Ruta

This plant, when made into a homeopathic remedy, helps connective tissue.

Ruta Graveolens 30c is a useful remedy for athletes.  It is great for sprained ankles, tendinitis, and other injuries to the connective tissue.  It is also indispensable if you have an injury to the illiac crest.  This is called a hip pointer in the world of athletics. Please read this earlier post which has a success story on the use of Ruta.  The dental ligament, which is under your gums, can become injured from dental work.  Ruta can help heal the insult to the dental tissues quickly.

9.    Your Constitutional Remedy in a 30C

You only know your constitutional remedy after having a series of appointments with a classical homeopath.  One of the nice things about a constitutional remedy is that you get sick less often.  But, nothing is perfect and people on homeopathy do get sick occasionally.  If you feel you are getting sick, but have no specific symptoms, you can take a 30C dose or two for a couple of days of your constitutional remedy and it will help ward off whatever is coming.

If you are hoping that we are not done after the next post, you are correct!  There are definitely more than 10 essential natural health care products that are hard to live without.

Fear of Flying and Other Trauma in Airplanes

The vacation is over, as is the poor internet connections, which prevented me from posting as often as I had planned.

Trauma in an airplane--helped by Homeopathy

On the way home, my sons, 12 and 15, got to sit together in the very back row of the plane.  My husband and I were split apart.  My kids got to sit next to someone who normally got sick while flying.  YAY!.  Glad it was them and not me.  Apparently the poor fellow spent at least 45 minutes in the bathroom during the 2 hour flight.

Had he been fortunate enough to be sitting next to a homeopath who had her remedy kit handy in the plane (that would be me), the homeopath would have considered these remedies.

First, if the issue was related to the up and down motion of the airplane, which one can experience during turbulence, take offs and landings, I would have given him Borax.  This is a remedy that has the symptom of being worse from up and down motion.  Another remedy to consider for motion sickness is Cocculus indicus.  I believe I mentioned this as a jet lag remedy, but it is also a great remedy for motion sickness in airplanes and boats.  There are actually 61 remedies for nausea caused by motion.  Another one to consider is  Nux Vomica, a good all purpose remedy, especially for nausea from over indulgence.  So if too many drinks at the airport bar was the source of the distress–and this is not too far a stretch if the fellow was nervous about flying and wanted to calm his nerves–Nux Vomica would be the first choice.  If anxiety about potential death and chills were in the picture, try Arsenicum.  Homeopathic Tobacco, or Tabaccum, is another motion sickness remedy.  This remedy is also very chilly, but feels more distressed by the illness than by the thought of possibly dying in a plane crash. Like a child who sneaks his dad’s cigarettes, it also includes dizziness along with the nausea.

Sometimes it is hard to separate fear of flying from motion sickness.  There are many remedies for fear of flying, and it really depends on what the fear is about.  If you are certain that death is imminent, consider Aconite before the flight and during the flight.  If the fear of death includes nausea and chills, consider Arsenicum.  Argentum nitricum, common name Silver nitrate, is a remedy for fear of flying that would also include claustrophobia.  Aconite also has this symptom, but the emphasis is on death in Aconite, where as the closed in spaces would be the prominent symptom in Argentum nitricum.  Arg Nit is a warm remedy as well.

Another option is Bach Rescue Remedy prior to and during the flight.  You could also have someone familiar with Bach Flowers to mix a customized blend of Bach flowers to match your situations and symptoms.

There are many possibilities to help make your flight more enjoyable, short of drinking yourself into oblivion before and during the flight. If these options don’t help or match your symptoms, call a professional homeopath to help.

Jet Lag and Homeopathy

Homeopathy can help jet lag.

One of the worst things about travel is the Jet Lag that accompanies that.  One of the best remedies for jet lag is Cocculus indicus.  I have seen it work first hand for my husband who travels a lot for work and for my son.

Two years ago the family went on a vacation to Spain and Portugal.  After finally getting to sleep, my youngest son woke up in the morning and did not feel good.  He was nauseous and didn’t feel like eating at all.  We had a car trip scheduled from Madrid to the Algarve.  It did not look good for my son.

Cocculus is a remedy for fatigue from travels and loss of sleep.  An accompanying symptom is nausea.  Cocculus is a motion sickness and morning sickness remedy as well.  My son had all those symptoms, plus, he refused to talk.  He just wanted to sleep.

Just a few minutes before we packed everything into the car I gave him a dose of Cocculus.  Twenty minutes into the car ride, he started talking and didn’t quit for hours.  The remedy helped save the first few days of our trip.  When we arrived, he slept well.

Arnica montana also helps with jet lag and exhaustion.  If you take a dose when you arrive or when you start to feel tired, it can give you a second wind to make it until bed time in your part of the world.

If traveling for business and you find yourself thinking of business issues while not sleeping, Nux Vomica would be a good remedy to try.

Another option for dealing with Jet Lag is to use an Australian Bush Flower Travel essence.  You can either put the drops or the creme on once an hour while traveling.  My oldest son used it when he went to China with my husband.  It worked very well for him.  He used it, my husband did not (he took nothing) and he recovered from his jet much more quickly than my husband did.

Homeopathic Alternatives to Tylenol–Part 2

Homeopathic Alternatives for Injuries

Arnica Montana:  This is a remedy for trauma, or anything that feels like trauma.  Aches and pains associated with overuse of muscles. It may hurt to move.  It will likely feel better with ice, but may feel better with warmth. The person who needs Arnica often feels they don’t need anything.  “I’m fine,

Headers in Soccer can cause injuires

really!!”  You may find it helpful after an athletic event to help the body heal itself.  Gardening in the spring after being housebound all winter.  Tripping and falling, bruising oneself, etc.  Arnica is great post-surgery, dental extractions, etc.  Always try Arnica first unless the symptoms are drastically different from Arnica symptoms.

Bryonia:  This is a remedy for anything that feels worse from movement and better from being wrapped.  Often the next remedy after Arnica. Fear of moving may be a component.  The person may be grumpy and wish to be left alone.  The person may be very restless, but the motion makes them worse.

Rhus Tox:  This is a remedy for any injury that feels worse on first motion, better on continued motion, but eventually gets worse from motion again.  Rhus Tox is better from heat—the hotter the better. One may be reminded of arthritis with this type of pain—where someone can’t quite open the jar in the morning, but once their fingers are nimble, they can open anything, until the end of the day.  (Indeed Rhus Tox is one of many arthritis remedies.)  The person may be very restless, and the motion makes them feel better.

Bellis Perennis:  This remedy is for deep trauma and bruises:  deep muscle injuries, abdominal or pelvic trauma, surgery, etc.  Worse from warm bathing, cold drinks, becoming cold.  Better:  Cold applications to the part.  Also a remedy for injuries and inflammation of the nerves.  It is difficult to find this remedy in a store, for some reason.

Hypericum:  Injuries to nerve rich areas—fingers, tongue, genitals.  Sharp pains shoot upward from injured spot.  Great for dental work where the pain feels more neuralgic than traumatic.

Conium:  Injuries, especially to the glands, such as testicles, breasts, etc.

Lachesis:  Serious bruises with throbbing, pulsing pains.  Bruises sells and turn rapidly a dark purple or even black in color.  Worse:  Any amount of heat.  Better:  Cold.

Ruta:  Bruises to the periosteum, where the bone is close to the surface, such as the tibia, iliac crest, etc.  Also good for shin splints, where wrapping aggravates the condition.

There are many more common injury remedies.  The important thing to know is that one size doesn’t fit all in homeopathy.  You must choose the correct, or close to correct, remedy, or it won’t work.

Headaches

One common use for over the counter pain relievers is for headaches.  I often get asked what to take for a headache.  Will Arnica work? Is the most common question.  Arnica may work, if you got hit in the head with something and as a result have a headache. Nux Vomica will work if you have a headache because you had too much to drink. Belladonna will work if you have a headache from being overheated and your face is really red.

But garden variety headaches that one gets frequently or even occasionally are considered chronic conditions and a constitutional consultation with a professional homeopath is required to resolve them.

For more information on using homeopathy instead of Tylenol, please consider taking one of my classes.  Go to my website to read more about upcoming classes.
